Code Blue for Dangerous Cold

This blue lamp that sat at our Executive Director Dave Sanders' desk, facing the street, has been retired now that the Volunteers of America has opened a permanent cold-weather shelter.
It was used to alert our clients who are unhoused that Code Blue had been activated - that temperatures would drop below freezing, and to seek shelter.
Anyone walking by could check it to see if they needed to find additional, warm shelter that night.
It can be a long path back from homelessness, through substance abuse detox and rehab, through facing and healing trauma, through mental health diagnosis and support, through finding a place of employment and a home that will take a chance on them.
We aim to be the trusted friend who will meet our clients where they are. And always keep a light on for them, ready for when they are ready to come in and find a home.

Code Blue is a state-mandated program that requires counties to find shelter for anyone who requests it when the nighttime temperature drops below freezing for two consecutive hours, which is then paid for by the state. It's a collaborative effort by local governments (like NYC, Buffalo, Albany) and non-profits to provide warmth, meals, and support during dangerous winter conditions. |
